Warehouse Racking Installation Cost Guide (UK)

What does a professional warehouse racking installation actually cost in the UK? There's no single figure — pricing depends on the rack system, height, install conditions, certification and inspection requirements. Here's how Rackstor UK break it down so you can budget accurately.

Typical UK price ranges (supply & install)

  • Selective wide-aisle pallet racking — £85–£140 per pallet location installed.
  • Narrow aisle (VNA) racking — £120–£180 per pallet location; needs flatter floors and articulated trucks.
  • Drive-in / drive-through — £160–£240 per pallet location; cheaper per cubic metre on dense storage.
  • Push back racking — £210–£320 per pallet location.
  • Pallet shuttle / radio shuttle — £280–£450 per pallet location plus shuttle cart capex.
  • Longspan / boltless shelving — £55–£110 per bay installed.
  • Cantilever racking — £180–£420 per metre of run depending on arm length and load.
  • Mezzanine floors — £95–£170 per m² for a single-tier industrial mezzanine including stairs and edge protection (fire rating extra).

What drives the price

1. Rack type and density

Selective racking is cheapest per pallet location but uses the most floor space. High-density systems (drive-in, push-back, shuttle) cost more per location but deliver far more pallets per m² — usually cheaper overall once you factor in building rent.

2. Height of the build

Anything above ~6 m needs scissor lifts, MEWPs or scaffold towers, plus IPAF-certified operatives. Expect installation labour to rise roughly 8–15% for every additional 3 m of rack height.

3. Floor condition and surveys

VNA and high-bay racking demand FM2 / FM1 floor flatness. If the existing slab isn't flat enough, you'll need a floor survey (£400–£1,200) and potentially remedial grinding or a self-levelling overlay — sometimes the biggest hidden line item.

4. SEIRS-qualified installation

SEMA recommends only SEIRS-registered installers touch pallet racking. SEIRS teams cost slightly more per day than unqualified labour but are required for valid insurance, sign-off and ongoing SARI inspections. Rackstor UK quote SEIRS install as standard.

5. Safety accessories

Column guards, end-of-aisle barriers, mesh decks, anti-collapse mesh, load signs and pallet stops typically add 7–12% on top of the base rack cost — and are required for HSE compliance.

6. Design, CAD and project management

A proper SEMA design with stamped CAD layouts is included in a Rackstor UK quote; some installers charge £450–£1,500 for it separately. Be sure to compare apples with apples.

7. Inspections and ongoing compliance

HSE requires a competent annual rack inspection (SARI). Budget £350–£900 per year depending on warehouse size. Damaged components must be replaced by a competent installer — keep this in your TCO.

VNA vs wide-aisle — which costs less in total?

Per pallet location VNA is ~30% more expensive than selective. But VNA can store ~40% more pallets in the same footprint, so on a per-pallet-per-year basis (including rent) VNA is usually 15–25% cheaper for sites paying more than £8/ft² rent. Below that, selective wins.

How to get an accurate quote

  1. Share your building dimensions (length × width × clear internal height).
  2. Tell us the pallet size and average weight, and how many pallets you need to store.
  3. Confirm MHE — counterbalance, reach, articulated or VNA truck.
  4. Flag any constraints — sprinkler levels, dock doors, fire exits, racking you'd like reused.
